The Angel Project

A family that stands out...

If you walk into Angel's house you better keep an eye on your feet so that you don't step on any baby chicks. You see, in his house, the chickens live on the first floor (made of dirt) and the family of five lives on the second floor (made of old rickety wood). As you take the tiny winding steps up and reach the second floor you wonder if the floor is going to hold and you gingerly take a seat on the bed. Angel proceeds to tell you about his family. He proudly tells you about his children. He and his wife "sell in the streets" -- meaning that they sell newspapers. He says sometimes it is difficult as the work is unpredictable and the pay is small.

And yet, he says he is blessed. God has blessed him with a wife and three beautiful children. He will tell you stories of how God has blessed him. Angel will even break out in song about his Lord.

Many of the families that Groundwork Guatemala works with are broken. Parents may be married -- or not. Many times the father is abusive or non-existent. Angel is different. He is a man committed to God, his family, and the education of his children -- which he cannot afford.

Most of the children who are receiving scholarships have a difficult family life and the reason for their scholarship is to not only help them fulfill their dreams and to help them learn about their Savior, but it is to provide them with a safe environment and the character skills to break the cycle of abuse and indifference.

Angel's children have loving parents, but are still growing up in a broken society.

This family is an example to their community and perhaps have the faith and support to, together, be a positive influence on their community now and in the future. Angel has asked for that help for his children.
